Endemic to central Mexico, particularly the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley and Mixteca Alta in Oaxaca and Puebla, this plant grows at elevations of 5200-7500 feet in warm, xerophyllous thorn scrub forests. It thrives in alluvial limestone and shallow black soil. From March to June, it produces small, cup-shaped diurnal flowers in shades of pinkish-white to yellow-green, with fruits ready for harvest from June to August. It is cultivated for its edible fruits, and its branches are used as fuelwood.
