The name "Astrophytum" comes from the Greek words "astron" (star) and "phyton" (plant). Endemic to the Central Mexican Plateau (800-2000 meters), Astrophytum ornatum thrives in arid-to-semiarid conditions with intense sunlight, extreme temperatures, and nutrient-poor, well-draining soils. It grows abundantly but sparsely in semidesert xerophile scrub, often in canyons, limestone cliffs, or even near-vertical rockfaces. This species, the largest in its genus, has developed white woolly scales and spines to minimize water loss and protect from UV radiation. Flowers are large, lemon-yellow. We love this species for its unique trichome patterns that make no two the same.
