Native to western and southwestern Madagascar, this plant thrives in semi-arid areas with minimal rainfall, growing in bushland forests and dunes up to 3,200 feet. It climbs trees to reach sunlight. Greenish-yellow flowers appear on separate male and female plants, and those grown from seed develop a caudex. Its name, Xerosicyos (with xeros meaning 'dry' and sicyos meaning 'cucumber'), hints at its belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family (the cucumber family). We love this plant for its perfectly circular leaves and the large spacing between them
