Originating as a nursery cultivar, this plant is native to Northern Central Mexico to Oaxaca, found at 3,000-6,000 feet in hot, arid climates. It grows in tropical deciduous forests, xerophilousscrub, and occasionally grasslands. At 60 cm tall, it blooms small greenish-white flowers in March. Some plants may cluster or fan out, and the sweet fruits are edible.
